The N2S-2/3/4 Yellow Peril is a series of Stearman Model 75 trainer biplanes for the US Navy. The N2S is the improved successor to the Navy’s highly successful Stearman NS-1. The NS variant was fitted with the obsolete Wright R-790-8 engine, and the N2S biplanes improved on this with more powerful Lycoming and Continental engines. With the exception of the N2S-4, the N2S biplanes were distinct from other Stearman Model 75 biplanes for its full-swivel tail plane with a built-in lock. Despite these differences, the N2S-2/3/4 biplanes retained the simple construction, reliability and the notorious ground handling characteristics of the Model 75, with the latter, coupled with the distinct yellow US Navy markings, contributing to its now-famous moniker.
