Designed by McDonnell-Douglas, the AV-8B Harrier is a vertical/short take-off and landing aircraft. The Harrier II AV-8B is a second-generation variant used primarily for ground-attack and light missions. It was initially a “Day Attack Variant” and primarily a ground attack aircraft. The primary users of the Harrier 2 were the following: United States Marine Corps, the Spanish Navy and the Italian Navy. Produced for two decades from 1981 until 2003, the Harrier aircraft was even used for a Pepsi marketing campaign. The AV-8B Harrier II is a versatile aircraft that has participated in operations in the Gulf War and used for reconnaissance and close air support for the USMC ground troops. It is expected that Boeing will still be producing the AV-8B Harrier 2 for the next 20 years.
