The F-117 Nighthawk was the first aircraft to be equipped with stealth technology. This Lockheed ground-attack aircraft made its first flight in October 1983, but it was only in November 1988 when the aircraft was unveiled to the public. The aircraft’s unusual design brought out both surprise and doubt among pilots; the odd shape allows the aircraft to deflect radar signals. However, the stealth configuration comes with its consequences, which include lower engine power thrust (the aircraft has no afterburner) and low wing aspect ratio. The design restrictions were brought by the limitations in computer technology in the 1970s. The Nighthawk is most notable for its role during the Gulf War. In April 2008, the F-117 was retired from Air Force service. Only 64 F-117 Nighthawks were built.
